5 Red Flags to Look Out for When Hiring a Roofing Service

Most roofing materials have a lifespan of 20 to 50 years. While half a century is quite a long time, it isn’t forever. If you’ve worked in your building for some time or have just moved into an older building, you’ll probably need a roofing service soon.

Unfortunately, some roofing contractors are much better than others. In addition, some may just be looking to scam you. Therefore, knowing how to tell the bad ones from the good ones can save you a lot of frustration.

If you’re about to hire local roofers, read on to learn five red flags to look out for when hiring a roofing service.

1. The Contractors Have No Licenses

When a roofing contractor has a license, he or she has the expertise necessary to pass a licensing agency’s exam. This challenges a roofer with questions about his or her roof maintenance and industry knowledge. A roofer usually has to have extensive schooling in this art to pass it.

In addition, he or she is likely to have extensive experience in the industry. Many agencies only issue licenses to contractors with a year or more of experience under their belt.

2. The Price is too Cheap or Expensive

It’s understandable that you’d want to save money. However, this may not be worth shoddy services. You can end up paying more on top of the first price to fix the issues of the first job.

Research the average price for roof services in your area. You can also take the prices of all services and find the average. After doing either of these, consider hiring the service that has a price closest to the average.

3. The Estimate Doesn’t List Each Service

A legitimate roofing company shouldn’t have anything to hide from you. Their contractors should provide you with a print-out that includes all the services and their prices. If they’re not willing to give you this when you ask, don’t trust that company.

In addition, don’t just sign off on a roofing job and let the roofers do whatever they want. They may add illegitimate fees and/or services to the contract as they work. While problems can come up, good roofers will inform you of the services needed before you pay for them.

4. Their Previous Clients’ Reviews Are Poor

There are many places where you can find reviews from previous clients. Google Customer Reviews, Yelp, and many more are good examples. Use these to gauge a company’s quality.

However, remember that fake reviews exist. Keep your eyes peeled for reviews that seem too good or otherwise strange. You can also visit more legitimate review sites such as the Better Business Bureau

5. They Don’t Have Insurance or Warranties

Mistakes happen even with the best local roofers. If they care about doing honest work and/or satisfying their customers, they should have a plan to compensate them. Insurance and/or warranties serve as these.

Search for or ask a roofing company about its warranties and its insurance. If it doesn’t have any of these, it’s possible that it doesn’t care about providing you with high-quality work.
